SCRAPHAPPY MARCH 2022

This month it’s a post not about me but about a family friend from many many years ago.

Long long before I ever knew anything about jelly rolls … charm packs…. Layer cakes … yo-yos this lady made things from scraps & everything was done by hand.

Her name is Winnie and she was a huge part of our lives. I met her through my husband & then came to know that she actually knew my mum from school & church !!! Today this beautiful lady suffers with dementia and can no longer remember anything. This post is a tribute to her & her creativity…

The tea cosy in the pics below are yo-yos and all attached to the backing by hand. The whole cosy is hand sewn and she presented me with this just before I got married. In todays world of instant coffee and tea bags I had stored this away at the bottom of my tea towel drawer. The age of this beautiful hand sewn piece is 30 years… an heirloom in so many ways. I brought it out and put it on display as it’s not going to sit in a drawer anymore.

Aunty Winnie & I made all the posies & favors for my wedding together. We made the table decorations together as well. We had a bond that was sewn together with embroidery thread & crafty stuff. She epitomised creativity…. Anything she touched she could make pretty and could change the look of it. I’m hoping to see her again someday…. She won’t remember me but I know her in my heart and hers ❤️

ScrapHappy is open to anyone using up scraps of anything – no new materials. It can be a quilt block, pincushion, bag or hat, socks or a sculpture. Anything made of genuine scraps is eligible. If your scrap collection is out of control and you’d like to turn them into something beautiful or useful instead of leaving them to collect dust in the cupboard, why not join us on the 15th of each month? Either email Kate via her blog. You can also contact Gun via her blog to join. We welcome new members. You don’t have to worry about making a long term commitment or even join in every month, just let either of us know a day or so in advance if you’re new and you’ll have something to show, so we can add your link. Regular contributors will receive an email reminder three days before the event.
